John Yeung Studentship in Pharmacology announced

The Hong Kong Graduate Association, which was formed in 1989 as part of the Philanthropy and Alumni Relations worldwide network, has made a donation to the University in memory of one of their members.

The Association wanted to honour and recognise graduate Professor John Yeung, who passed away in July last year, by making a gift of £30,000 and naming a room in his memory.

Seminar Room 1 in the Sherrington Building will now be called The John Yeung Seminar room, and in line with the University’s campaign and strategic priority to increase the number of PhD students, the donation will be used to part-fund a three year studentship in Pharmacology.

Match funded

The University will launch a competition to recruit a student PhD supervisor to oversee the John Yeung Studentship in spring 2014 with a start date of August 2014 and the gift will be match funded by the Institute of Translational Medicine.

Professor John Yeung came from Hong Kong to the University of Liverpool in 1978, and graduated with a BSc Honours in 1980 and obtained his PhD in 1984. He was then a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics which allowed him to develop his own independent research career in the pharmacology and toxicology of drugs, with a strong interest in traditional Chinese medicines.

Passion

Professor Kevin Park, Head of the Institute, said: “He took a strong interest in student affairs, actively developing the careers and well-being of new students as they arrived in Liverpool. He had a passion for football, and represented the Pharmacology five-a-side and eleven-a-side football teams with vigour and he was a life-long fan of Liverpool Football Club.”

On his return to Hong Kong, John joined the Hong Kong Chinese University as a Lecturer where he became a Professor of Biomedical Sciences and served as Dean. Throughout his career he pursued his twin ambitions of excellence in research and care in teaching with passion. He made regular return trips to Liverpool where he maintained collaborations with many friends in the Department of Pharmacology.

Professor Park continued: “The gift of the studentship will provide a lasting memorial to the work of Professor Yeung in Pharmacology. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.”

The objectives of the Association are to promote the interest of all graduates of the University of Liverpool in Hong Kong and China. To learn more visit: http://www.liverpooluga.com.hk/.
