The scholarships aim to contribute to the education of young professionals with the capabilities required to lead the energy industry into the future
The University of Liverpool has launched a scholarship programme, funded by the ScottishPower Foundation, aimed at young professionals in the energy industry.
ScottishPower, in partnership with its Spanish equivalent Fundacion IBERDROLA, will invest more than £1.65 million in research and education programmes between the UK and Spain with scholarships seeking to promote excellence in education in the area of energy.
Renewable energy
Special emphasis is given to the development of renewable energy sources, the enhancement of biodiversity and improving the efficiency of the energy system. The scholarships aim to contribute to the education of young professionals with the capabilities required to lead the energy industry into the future.
Professor Werner Hofer, Director of the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy at the University, said: “It is vital for our societies that we develop a more sustainable technology in all aspects of our economy.
“Educating students early with the problems we are going to face in the next two to three decades, and teaching them how to find better and more sustainable solutions, will be the key for a successful transformation.
“We are delighted that Scottish Power acknowledges this need with this joint initiative with IBERDROLA, and we look forward to working with them.”

Grants available
Grants are available to those who wish to study towards qualifications in energy and environment related studies such as renewable energies, sustainable energy systems, environment and biodiversity, clean coal technologies, emissions management, energy efficiency, energy storage, electric vehicles and smart grids. The grants cover full enrolment costs and provide an additional living allowance of £1,200 per month.
Masters scholarships are available to those applying for courses in the following:
- MSc Advanced Mechanical Engineering
- MSc Sustainable Structural Engineering
- MSc Civil and Environmental Engineering
- MSc (Eng) Energy and Power Systems
