The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014 has placed 18 University of Liverpool subjects in its top 200.
The ranking is a comprehensive guide to the world’s top universities in a range of popular subject areas.
Mechanical Engineering; Medicine; Earth and Marine Sciences; and Geography at the University entered the rank at 51-100, whilst Law; Physics; Materials Science; Environmental Sciences; Chemistry; Pharmacy and Pharmacology; Biological Sciences; and History, all placed in the 101-150.
English Language and Literature; Linguistics; Computer Science; Engineering (Civil); Communication and Media Studies; and Sociology, entered at 151-200.
This represents a fall of two subject areas from the 2013 ranking, where 20 Liverpool degree programmes were listed in the top 200. Four subject areas, however, have risen in the table this year – Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Law.
Reputation and research citations
Using data on reputation and research citations, the rankings highlight the 200 top universities in the world for 30 individual subjects. QS produces subject tables grouped under five broad faculty areas: Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; Life Sciences and Medicine; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences.
Commenting on the results Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, Professor Sir Howard Newby said: “This is an important league table. We will continue to strengthen our position in this ranking and raise the profile of our degree programmes globally.”
Of the UK universities, Cambridge was ranked top of the table with 14 subjects in first place, followed by Oxford with 10 subjects ranked first.
