Liverpool’s two principal universities will go head to head this week in the annual Sport Varsity.
The event, which takes place on Wednesday, 2 April, will see more than 1,000 students from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores support and represent their respective teams in 15 different sports.
The day will predominantly take place at Wyncote, the University of Liverpool’s outdoor sport facility. Male and female students will be competing in Football, Hockey, Lacrosse and Rugby League with the day culminating in the Rugby Union Varsity match.
Several other sporting clubs will be competing including the volleyball, handball and badminton teams, which will be participating at Liverpool John Moores’ IM Marsh facilities, as well swimming, netball and basketball which will all take place in the University of Liverpool’s Sports and Fitness Centre.
The event, which has been running for 20 years, is a chance for University societies and clubs to showcase student talent and go head to head in competitive sport. Affiliates, fellow students and staff are all invited to spectate and support their teams.
The University of Liverpool’s Athletic Union President, Matt Ward, said: “A rejuvenated Varsity is exactly what students in this city need. Well-promoted events will not only increase awareness of university sport and its high standard but will also help reignite the pride and loyalty students feel to their respective university.
“John Moores have the upper hand in terms of wins over the last 20 years, but we’re hoping the new found passion here will see the University of Liverpool step up to the plate this year.”
A promotional video, which was produced by Tom Day and fellow students from the National Film and Television School in London, has been released and is available to watch on You Tube.
The video, which takes the viewer on a tour of Liverpool’s most iconic sites and shows an array of sports, was funded by Friends of the University of Liverpool and Sport Liverpool and has already had over 11,000 views.
