A former University of Liverpool PhD student has been awarded the Political Studies Association‘s Arthur McDougall Prize for best PhD in 2013.Dr Sophie Whiting, now employed as a lecturer within the Department of Politics, collected the prize after her thesis ‘Is it still about the split? Dissident Irish Republicanism since 1986′ was commended by the judges for the quality of its empirical research, its theoretical development, unique level of access and balanced judgements. It will appear as a book later this year.
Commenting on her achievement, Dr Whiting said: “I am delighted to have won such a prestigious and competitive award. The University has provided an encouraging learning environment throughout my studies and Liverpool has been a great place to do a PhD.”
Dr Whiting, who started her PhD at Liverpool in 2009, received her award at the Political Studies Association’s annual conference in Manchester. The Association is the main representative body for Politics academics, with almost 2,000 members.
