The University of Liverpool’s Institute of Irish Studies refurbished library was officially opened by the Irish Ambassador, Daniel Mulhall.
The library is named in honour of Brendan Mac Lua, the co-founder of The Irish Post newspaper, whose private collection of the newspaper was donated to the Institute.
Spanning two floors after major refurbishment and full cataloguing, the Mac Lua library includes significant collections of Irish History – particularly on Irish emigration to Britain and particularly to Liverpool – Politics, Literature and Irish Language.
Professor Marianne Elliott, Director of the Institute of Irish Studies, said: “The Mac Lua Library provides a dedicated resource that enhances the experience of students, staff and researchers from the wider community.
“It consists of papers and personal libraries donated to the Institute over the past 25 years and is particularly rich in manuscripts charting the development of Irish Studies as a discipline. It is a unique facility for the Irish in Britain in particular.”
Irish Ambassador, Daniel Mulhall, said: “I am delighted to open this new research library named in honour of Brendan Mac Lua.
“The Institute works hard to increase knowledge and understanding between Britain and Ireland and build ever-stronger relations.
This library provides an important resource to support future generations of students and researchers to understand our shared history and enhance British-Irish relations.”
