University apprenticeship scheme wins ‘Exceptional HR Achievement’ award

The University of Liverpool’s apprenticeship scheme has been recognised by the Universities Human Resources (UHR) award for ‘Exceptional HR Achievement’.

The apprentice scheme was established at the University in 2011 and has since recruited more than 85 young people into posts across the University. Part of the government’s National Apprenticeship Scheme, the University offers placements between one and four years to individuals who want to work towards a work-based qualification, such as NVQ, a technical certificate, or build up their knowledge and skills in a particular area.

Exceptional achievement

The Human Resources team has also provided apprenticeship training to more than 36 University managers, as well as apprenticeships to six laboratory technicians.

The UHR award, a leading organisation for HR professionals, recognised exceptional achievement by a HR team or individual.

Carol Costello, Director of Human Resources, said: “We are delighted that the scheme has been recognised by such an important body in the sector. Apprenticeships are an excellent way of helping young people familiarise themselves with the world of work and are an important addition to our civic contribution as well as the University’s commitment to the development of talent.

“This is a reflection on the involvement of the many Schools and Departments that have been instrumental in supporting the success of the scheme across the institution.”

Collaboration

The University has also set up a pre-apprenticeship pilot in collaboration with City of Liverpool College and Liverpool City Council. Aimed at 16-17 yrs old who have attained a grade F-D in their Maths, English and ICT GCSEs, the programme provides a range of skills development, qualifications and work experience. It is hoped that at the end of this programme, pre-apprentices will go on to the next stage, equipped to complete a full apprenticeship.
