The University of Liverpool has moved up 12 places in the 2014 Times Higher Education (THE) World ranking.
Liverpool is ranked 157th, up from 169 last year. The result places Liverpool 20th in the Russell Group, ahead of Nottingham (171), Newcastle (201-225), Cardiff (201-225) and Queens Belfast (251-275).
In addition to an overall table, the top 100 subject tables are produced covering six broad curriculum areas: arts and humanities; clinical; pre-clinical and health; engineering and technology; life sciences; physical sciences; and social sciences.
Liverpool is in the top 100 in the clinical, pre-cinical and health table (90th) and the physical sciences table (93rd).
The UK has lost three universities from the top 200 (Reading, Dundee and Newcastle), and now has 29 top 200 institutions, down from 31. Liverpool is ranked 24th in the UK (up from 26th), with notable climbers Warwick (up 38 places to 103rd), Glasgow up 23 places to 132nd) and Southampton (up 14 places to 132nd).
The Global rankings use 13 separate performance indicators to examine a university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
The California Institute of Technology tops the ranking for the fourth year running, with Harvard second and Oxford third.
