Boost for Widening Participation

The University is part of a consortium of Russell Group universities that will create innovative online resources for teachers to improve access to higher education.

The project, which is funded by HEFCE, will help improve access by students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups to selective higher education institutions.

Laura Cattrell, Head of Educational Opportunities at the University, said: “This project has been developed with input from teachers and colleagues from across the education sector. We’re looking forward to launching the project and helping more students access highly selective universities.”

The resources will be of particular value to target schools located some distance from universities, and those schools with little history of progression to selective universities. The materials will also bolster the nationwide, biennial teacher conferences currently run by the widening participation departments across Russell Group universities.

The project will complement the work of the National Networks for Collaborative Outreach (NNCO) which deliver a nationally coordinated approach to working with schools, universities and colleges to help people access HE.
