Professor Dmitry Shchukin, from the Department of Chemistry and the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy (SIRE), has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant, the first award of its type for the University
Professor Shchukin will receive £1.7million over the next five years for a project entitled `NANOCAPSULE’ which will develop nanoencapsulation technologies based on switchable nanoscale barriers for novel generation of controlled energy storage and delivery systems.
Professor Shchukin’s project aims to develop new nanoscale technologies for polyenergy storage and personalised energy demand systems.
Professor Ronan McGrath, Head of School of Physical Sciences said, “This award is important recognition of the standing of Professor Shchukin, and builds on a strong track record within the School of Physical Sciences in winning ERC grants.
“As one of our lead academics for the Stephenson Institute, this also marks another key step in the Institute’s visibility, further emphasizing our continued contribution to leading research in the fields of chemistry and energy storage”
The European Research Council, set up in 2007, is a Europe-wide funding organisation which supports outstanding frontier research in any scientific discipline.
Professor Shchukin will also be speaking at a workshop being held for University researchers who are interested in applying for an ERC grant.
