Go Higher Conference celebrates its success

The University’s Go Higher programme celebrated the achievements of its students past and present and looked ahead to the future with its newly reconfigured programme at its recent conference.

The annual event showcases the achievements of current and past Go Higher students who are now engaged in undergraduate or postgraduate degrees at the University. Students presented papers and displayed posters about their research projects highlighting the valuable experience in different kinds of writing and research they received on the Go Higher course.

Panel discussion

The event also included a panel discussion involving current and former students, teaching staff and staff involved with Widening Participation across the University. Topics touched on included the learning experience on the programme, the different challenges faced by mature students, and the transition into Higher Education.

Professor Jill Rudd, Go Higher Director of Studies, said: “The Go Higher Conference was an ideal opportunity to understand the range of achievements of students on the programme and for current, past and intending students and staff to meet and mingle over refreshments, made possible by the support of the HSS Widening Participation funding.

“It’s great to see provision for mature students recognised as part of the University’s re-invigorated WP initiative.

Unique

“Go Higher is a unique – and highly successful – experiential learning course in the UK that widens participation and provides rapid progression to Higher Education.

“The majority of students who complete this course go on to degrees here at the University of Liverpool as well as at other institutions; some going as far as PhD. We are delighted to recognise the longstanding success of this programme and the students who take it at an event such as this.”

Access course

The Go Higher programme is a one-year access course aimed at people without traditional qualifications or who have been out of education for a while but want to get back to formal learning.

It is specifically designed to introduce students to the research habits and learning processes required at degree level and to develop the confidence, skills and independence needed for success.
