Postcard: Liverpool computer scientists in Buenos Aires

Frank Wolter, Davide Grossi, Ana Ozaki, Frans Oliehoek at the IJCAI in Buenos Aires

Computer Scientists from the University of Liverpool visited Buenos Aires, Argentina to present a large number of papers at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), which is the leading international conference in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The current intense interest in AI was reflected in an extraordinary number of paper submissions to the conference. The program of the conference broke IJCAI’s previous record, attracting 1,996 paper submissions in total. After rigorous reviewing, some 571 papers (28.6 percent) were accepted for presentation at the conference.

In total, Liverpool Computer Scientists presented 16 papers at IJCAI 2015.  Liverpool was second only to the University of Oxford in the number of papers presented at IJAC and confirms its position as one of the pre-eminent departments for AI in the world.

The following members of Liverpool Computer Science were involved in authoring IJCAI papers: Danushka Bollegala, Davide Grossi, Andre Hernich,  Piotr Krysta, Frans Oliehoek, Ana Ozaki, Bo Tang, Wiebe van der Hoek, and Frank Wolter.

The topics which these papers covered ranged from automated planning (developing new algorithms  that allow intelligent systems to decide what actions to take under uncertainty about the environment), game and argumentation theory (studying auctions, voting protocols and models of negotiation), computational linguistics and  web mining (new algorithms for computing similarity between terms from web data) to intelligent data integration and querying (new models and algorithms for querying distributed and incomplete data using ontologies).
