Dr Fiona Rowe, from the University’s Institute of Psychology, Health and Society, has been awarded an Exceptional Service Award from The British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS) in recognition of her voluntary work in the field of Orthoptics.
For the last 20 years Dr Rowe has volunteered for BIOS, serving as Chair of the Professional Development Committee for six years, Northern branch committee member for six years and, most recently, Director of Research for 10 years.
Continuous voluntary work
Founded in 1937 BIOS is a professional and educational body for the UK and Republic of Ireland representing Orthoptists.
There are around 1,500 Orthoptists in Britain and Ireland; its all-graduate workforce comes from three universities – University of Liverpool, University of Sheffield and Glasgow Caledonian University. They provide Orthoptists for all four UK countries and the Republic of Ireland.
Exceptional Service
Dr Rowe was recognised for her continuous voluntary work for BIOS during a national stroke and neuro rehabilitation meeting earlier this month held in Birmingham at which she was speaking about her research and evidence based practice.
Of BIOS and her work on behalf of the professional body, Dr Rowe said: “I have had the pleasure to meet and work with so many great Orthoptists through my BIOS activity.”
