What next for the EU? – University hosts workshop exploring the refugee crisis

The University’s Europe and the World Centre (EWC) is hosting a workshop exploring the current refugee crisis in Europe.

The workshop will tackle the legal aspects of the refugee crisis, the attitudes towards the issue in East Central Europe as well as what Europe should do next to tackle the crisis.

There will be two speakers at the event including a professor who is currently living and working in Budapest. Professor István Pogány, is Professor Emeritus of Law at Warwick University and a Visiting Professor at the Central European University in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.

An accomplished author and speaker on human rights and international law, Professor Pogány will speak about the dominant attitudes towards non-Europeans and Non-Christians in East Central Europe and the reasons why the region remains resistant to notions of cosmopolitanism that are generally accepted in the West.

What should Europe do next?

Dr Eleanor Drywood and Harriet Gray, from the Law School at the University of Liverpool will also be speaking about the legal aspects of the crisis along with what options are available to the EU in order to tackle the issue. The workshop will be chaired by Professor Erika Harris from the Department of Politics.

The Refugee Crisis in Europe workshop takes place on Wednesday 18 November, 2pm-4.30pm at the Rendall Building, Lecture Theatre 5. The event is open to all students, staff and members of the public. Refreshments will be served from 1.45pm.
