Students gain valuable experience at leading flu vaccine company

A Business Gateway initiative has enabled eight students to complete a three month summer paid internship with Speke-based company Seqirus (formally Novartis), one of the world’s major manufacturing sites for flu vaccine.

Business Gateway worked with the Careers Service to develop a recruitment programme after Seqirus approached the University for help on their busy summer production for next season’s vaccine quota.

Engineering and Chemistry Students took internship positions in the company’s Engineering, Quality Control and Health & Safety departments.

A valuable contribution

Tom Wescombe interned at Seqirus, graduated this year and is now back at Seqirus working as a Quality Control Analyst: “I found the experience very rewarding. The culture of the company is very friendly while ensuring a professional atmosphere. It was a great opportunity to see how the graduate position operates, gain some valuable experience and earn a bit of money over summer!

“The best thing about it for me was the management really do acknowledge hard work by giving you actual responsibility and I came out of the internship with a decent job that is highly relevant to my degree.”

Seqirus were impressed by the overall ability and competence of the interns and their valuable contribution to the company over the busy summer period.
