New MOOC explores how we use and lose energy

The University of Liverpool is launching a free online course for learners with a need or desire to learn more about the laws governing energy.

Energy: Thermodynamics in Everyday Life’, is a five week MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) that provides an introduction to the laws and the application of thermodynamics using both everyday examples and issues of global concern.

The MOOC was developed by Professor Eann Patterson, the AA Griffith Chair of Structural Materials and Mechanics at the University, along with Matthew O’Rourke and Rob Lindsay from the University’s e-learning unit. It is delivered by University partners, FutureLearn.

Professor Patterson said: “This course focuses on some of the challenges associated with energy supply and consumption.

“Energy is essential to life at many levels and its transformation from one form to another – whether in the cells of our bodies or the machines that enable modern society – is governed by the laws of thermodynamics.

“As part of the course, participants will be asked to perform simple experiments in their kitchen at home to give them a practical insight into the significance of the laws of thermodynamics.

“Learners on this MOOC will join University of Liverpool undergraduates who will be taking this online course as part of their degree.”

The course begins on 8 February, but learners can sign up now. For free registration, please visit: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/energy/1
