Visitors to Liverpool’s World Museum can learn about the marvels of modern medicine as part of the University’s latest ‘Meet the Scientist’ event this weekend.
‘Marvellous Medicine’ will feature an array of interactive family-friendly activities, with scientists on hand to explain what medicines are, how they are made, and what they might look like in the future.
Activities include making a unique ‘personalised medicine’ bottle to learn how genetics can decide which medicines work best for different people, and taking part in an experiment to show how the cure for scurvy was found.
Dr Carol Roberts, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences Research and Knowledge Exchange Manager, said: “This is a great chance for people to learn about the research that goes into developing new medicines, as well as improving their safety and effectiveness. We’ll also be highlighting medical progress from historical discoveries right through to the present day.”
Staff from the Victoria and Gallery and Museum will also offer visitors the chance to handle some intriguing medical artefacts, including a bladder stone crusher and a tonsil guillotine, from the University’s heritage collections and the Liverpool Medical Institution.
This is the third event in the ‘Meet the Scientist’ series which launched last year and aims to engage the public with health and life sciences research in an informal and interactive way.
