Professor Paula Williamson, Head of the University’s Department of Biostatistics, together with other members of the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) Northwest Hub for Trials Methodology Research (NWHTMR) have been chosen to become supervisors in a European International Training Network.
The network, entitled Methods in Research on Research (MIROR), aims to create an innovative and ambitious multidisciplinary intersectoral joint doctoral training programme in the field of clinical research. The project is led by Professor Isabelle Boutron at Paris Descartes University.
MIROR’s aim is to train 15 PhD students to become the future generation of high-level scientists to develop innovative methods of Research on Research. The students will be awarded with a double degree from the host University and Paris Descartes University.
World-class research
Professor Paula Williamson, Professor Carrol Gamble, Professor Bridget Young, Dr Catrin Tudur Smith and Dr Jamie Kirkham will be working with other world-class research teams in various disciplines from six different European countries; six non-academic partners involved in diverse sectors, and four major academic partners as part of the project.
The NWHTMR is a collaboration between the Universities of Liverpool, Lancaster, Bangor and Manchester, involving experts in medical statistics, clinical trial methodology, pharmacoeconomics, sociology and clinical psychology. Established by the MRC in 2008, NWHTMR is a world-class centre of excellence where methodological issues facing the clinical trials community are investigated, the overall aim being to improve patient care by improving the validity and relevance of the healthcare evidence base.
