Internationally renowned guest speakers will consider a broad range of legal issues from Brexit, to international criminal and investment law, to child protection during a series of events hosted by Liverpool Law School this April.
On April 22, Charles Grant, Director of the Centre for European Reform (CER), will ask: With Brexit looming, refugees flowing in, Russia threatening and the euro crisis rumbling, can the EU survive? at a free event hosted by the School’s European Law Unit.
Charles Grant works on EU foreign and defence policy, as well as holding membership on advisory boards for the Moscow School of Civic Education; the Turkish thinktank, EDAM and the French thinktank, Terra Nova.

Two days earlier, on April 20, the School’s Economic Governance Unit welcomes University College London’s, Dr Martins Paparinskis for its guest lecture considering Recent Developments of Fair and Equitable Treatment in International Investment Law, and the impact on investment treaty-making.

British lawyer, Wayne Jordash QC is the guest of the School’s Critical Approaches to International Criminal Law Unit for a lecture discussing International Trials and the Justice-Victim Dichotomy on Friday April 29.
Wayne, who has experience of both the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, will ask whether there should be renewed engagement with victims to allow them a greater voice when selecting the object and purpose of international justice.

On April 28, the Critical Approaches to International Criminal Law Unit will show a screening of Klaartje Quirins documentary, Peace v Justice which examines many of the themes considered by Wayne Jordash QC in his talk the following day.
Peace v Justice puts the International Criminal Court under the spotlight, and analyses its trial of Joseph Kony, the African rebel leader whose Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has spread death and destruction throughout Uganda for two decades.

To complete a very busy week, Pernilla Leviner, Associate Professor at Stockholm University’s Faculty of Law will discuss the 1979 Swedish ban on the corporal punishment of children and the implications, effects and challenges faced three decades later, at a joint European Children’s Rights Unit and International Law and Human Rights Unit event.
