Apex 2 wins ‘best educational building’ award

The University of Liverpool’s Apex 2 building has won ‘best educational building award’ at this year’s regional LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Building Excellence Awards.

A  £35 million building, Apex 2 was constructed to accommodate more than 200 researchers currently working in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, to provide state of the art facilities, including a BioBank, which will create a unique research and industry environment.

Apex 2 was awarded for ‘building excellence in the delivery of outstanding construction and workmanship’

Excellence in construction

The LABC awards ceremony took place at the Bolton Whites Hotel, based at the Macron Stadium – home of Bolton Wanderers FC, with 600 people attending the event.

The University’s Liverpool Bio Innovation Hub was also a finalist for the award for Best Commercial Building category.

According to LABC, finalists are judged on ‘the essence of good buildings…not necessarily on architectural beauty, but on the “excellence” shown from a construction and technical building control point of view.’

A genuine team effort

LABC’s North West Regional Chair, Roy Benyon, said: “The awards are an opportunity for us all to celebrate the very best construction in the region, recognising the high level of skill and professionalism the building industry is capable of reaching.

The University’s Senior Project Manager for Major Capital Projects, David Williams said: “The successful completion of Apex 2 reflects the genuine team effort of all involved in the project – in particular the representatives of the Institutes of Ageing and Chronic Disease and Translational Medicine and the main contractor Shepherd Construction.

“I believe everyone considered they had a value in the process and this is evidenced by the quality of the finished building. My thanks for everyone’s input into what was a challenging project to deliver in the required timescales.”
