Irish Foreign Affairs Minister and UK Shadow Foreign Secretary to debate EU Referendum

Ireland’s Foreign Affairs Minister and the UK’s Shadow Foreign Secretary will debate Perspectives on the EU Referendum, at a special event hosted by the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Irish Studies.

Charles Flanagan TD will join Hillary Benn MP on a heavyweight panel, also featuring St Helen’s North MP and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Irish in Britain, Conor McGinn; and Chair of the London Irish Lawyers Association and Co-Chair of Irish4Europe, Gráinne Mellon.

The event will be chaired by University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer and the panel introduced by Director of the Institute of Irish Studies, Professor Peter Shirlow.

Professor Peter Shirlow said: “The Institute of Irish Studies has worked with various high profile partners to encourage debate around the UK’s membership of the EU. Part of that work has been to consider what effect leaving the EU would have upon the island of Ireland.

“This event takes that debate further and will also highlight the importance of the EU in maintaining and developing the British-Irish relationship in terms of trade, peace-building and cultural contact.”

Perspectives on the EU Referendum takes place on Wednesday 1st June from 12.30pm in the Victoria Gallery and Museum’s Leggate Theatre on Brownlow Hill, Liverpool. The event is free and all are welcome to attend. To book your place, please email dorothy@liv.ac.uk
