Professor elected President of the European Pancreatic Club

Professor John Neoptolemos from the University’s Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine has been elected President of the European Pancreatic Club (EPC) in recognition of the great work that the University of Liverpool undertakes in the field.

EPC, a non-profit, international scientific organisation, is leading the development of International Guidelines on Chronic Pancreatitis, a neglected health care area and one with considerable needs.

EPC was founded in 1965, with the idea to bring together basic scientists and clinicians in an informal atmosphere to promote friendship and research communication between them.

Significant role

Professor John Neoptolemos, The Owen and Ellen Evans Chair of Surgery and Clinical Lead for NICE Clinical Cancer Guidelines, has been elected as President ahead of EPC’s 48th Annual Scientific Meeting.

Of the appointment Professor Neoptolemos FMedSci., said: “I’m delighted and honoured to have been chosen to serve as President of the EPC. This is a massive privilege and I am looking forward to playing such a significant role in further promoting its members and the field of pancreatic research.

“The University leads on so many aspects of pancreas disease through basic and translational research, national and international clinical trials, large collaborative studies and guideline development.”

Wealth of expertise

Professor Gavin Brown, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, said: “Professor Neoptolemos’ global standing and wealth of expertise in pancreatic cancer as both a clinician and a researcher makes him the ideal choice for this appointment.”

EPC’s 48th Annual Scientific Meeting will be held in St Georges Hall, Liverpool from Wednesday, 6 – Saturday, 9 July 2016. The meeting will include state-of-the-art presentations from 50 invited international speakers.
