Viewpoint: David Cameron steps down as an MP

Dr Stuart Wilks-Heeg is Head of Politics at the University of Liverpool:

“David Cameron’s decision to stand down as an MP is no great surprise.

“It is now the norm for ex-PMs to leave the House at an early opportunity.

“Should he wish to, there will now be ample opportunities to exert far more influence and earn a great deal more that he would as a backbench MP.

“Cameron’s political legacy should have been that he would go down in history as the Conservative leader who, against all the odds, got the party back into contention and restored its reputation as the natural party of government.

“But he will be remembered as the PM who took a huge gamble and lost, resulting in the UK leaving the EU.”
