The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer and Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson have performed the traditional topping out ceremony for the new Derby and Rathbone Halls of residence on the Greenbank site in South Liverpool.
The Halls represent the final phase of the University’s £250 million investment in student accommodation which forms part of an overall £600 million investment the campus as part of the commitment to providing a world-class student experience and research environment.
The first phase of the University’s investment in accommodation began on campus with the construction of Vine Court, closely followed by Crown Place which opened its doors to students in September of 2015. Both of these new facilities provide brand new, high-quality accommodation to over 2,000 students at the heart of our campus.
This redevelopment covers an area of nearly 500,000 sq. ft. and will see the construction of four new blocks of residences, as well as the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Greenbank House.
Modernised campus
Vice-Chancellor Professor Janet Beer, said: “The team have worked hard to ensure that this investment creates a modernised campus which contributes actively to the conservation setting of the area and enhances this popular local residential area.
“Alongside the new residences there will be improved footpaths and cycle ways around the site, a new pedestrian crossing and improved street lighting around the facility which will improve the surrounding vicinity for local residents in the area as well as students.
“The local economy will undoubtedly benefit from the new residences and the increased student numbers who we know enjoy frequenting the local shops, cafes, bars and restaurants in the area. By investing in our accommodation we are able to meet the expectations and requirements of our diverse student community and provide them with a quality environment that they will enjoy to live and study in.
“It further ensures that we are able to offer a first-rate student experience which matches the excellence of our teaching provision.”
New teaching and support facilities
In total, Greenbank village will create over 1,300 bedrooms, with self –catering and ensuite facilities, which is an increase in the number of rooms available at this site of 40% .
Derby Hall itself will serve as the focal block on site housing the main reception area and containing over 300 bedrooms.
The next phase of Greenbank’s redevelopment will see the refurbishment of Derby Old Court which when it’s completed in 2018, will consist of student accommodation along with breakout areas and new spaces especially for student societies and clubs to use whilst living in Halls.
The final phase of the Greenbank redevelopment will see the construction of the new Roscoe & Gladstone Halls and the refurbishment of Greenbank House. Work on this phase will be completed in time for the 2019 intake of students .
New teaching and support facilities on campus are also in progress with a £16 million investment to support a new lecture theatre hub in the central area of campus alongside accompanying innovative learning spaces. This will provide a new environment for staff and students to use for teaching and break out activities.
