Science and Society: Why is investing in science and higher education essential for civil society?

In the next lecture of the Science and Society series, Universities UK President and Vice-Chancellor of Kent,  Professor Dame Goodfellow will discuss the societal benefits of investing in science and higher education.

Professor Dame Goodfellow will outline the case for such investment for an economically and intellectually rich modern society.

Experience

Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent since 2007. She is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and is the President of Universities UK.

Goodfellow completed her BSc degree in physics at the University of Bristol and obtained a PhD degree in biophysics at the Open University Research Unit in Oxford. She began her career as Professor of Biomolecular Science at Birkbeck College in 1995.  In 2002, she was appointed chief executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the first woman to lead a UK research council and  as chair of the British Science Association from 2009 to 2014.

In 2007, Goodfellow was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent. Goodfellow has been elected Universities UK president from 2015-2017.
