A programme which aims to increase the opportunities for enterprise and entrepreneurship for students at the University has been launched for 2016/17.

The University-wide initiative gives students the opportunity to access support with developing new business ideas, launching new products or services, or developing an existing business.

Students who get involved will be able to choose from a range of extracurricular activities including enterprise master classes and workshops which will run throughout the academic year. Students will also be able to access networking opportunities with members of the local business community, as well as the Business Clinic, which offers one-to-one support sessions for those seeking to develop a business idea.

Mechatronics Engineering student Gino Zambelli and Business Management student Joseph Hetherington worked with the Enterprise Programme last year and have now successfully turned their business idea into a live start-up.

The pair attended a number of workshops and sessions to develop their ideas before beginning the launch process.

Commenting on the project, Joseph said: “Our original idea was an online directory and market place for fitness trainers. We are now in our final stages of development for this business and the service will be launching in January 2017, just over a year since we started attending the Enterprise Programme.

“We used the skills we gained from the training to create an online website and community.”

The website, known as BeachBodyStudent, focuses on helping other students to keep fit and healthy at university whilst keeping to a tight budget.
