The University has launched a School Governor Initiative to contribute to the leadership and improvement of state schools by engaging staff in school governance roles.
The Merseyside area includes many secondary schools where GCSE, A-level and BTEC results fall significantly below the national average. This presents the University with a challenge in relation to ensuring local children achieve the qualifications required to transition into Higher Education.
Anyone aged 18 or over and living in the UK can be a governor. Governors are required to oversee the long-term development of a school with an average time commitment of 10-15 hours per term.
Both academic and professional services staff have important skills to offer in relation to the management of secondary education. School governance offers the opportunity for staff to support the strategic leadership of local schools whilst also developing invaluable management and skills in a unique and challenging environment.

In other universities across the UK, becoming a School Governor has been shown to have a positive impact for newer staff in terms of developing transferable skills, as well as offering more experienced staff an opportunity to develop skills in new areas such as team working, negotiation, finance, business awareness and increased knowledge of the school sector.
