Open House fortnight of public events announced for May

The University is opening its doors later this spring for an exciting fortnight of free public events.

Open House runs from 15-25 May and features a vibrant and diverse line up of topical talks, performances, exhibitions and interactive experiences to engage and entertain people of all ages and interests.

It’s also an opportunity for the local community to discover what the campus has to offer, including architectural hidden gems, galleries and museums, state-of-the art sports facilities and lifelong learning opportunities.

A series of evening lectures will explore some of today’s most complex global challenges, such as climate change, the migrant crisis, globalisation, the rise of radicalism, and Brexit.

As part of Liverpool’s Light Night Festival on Friday, 19 May, the Victoria Gallery & Museum will unveil a specially-commissioned outdoor light projection courtesy of Liverpool-born artist John Higgins, who found global success as a comic book artist and writer for 2000AD, DC, and Marvel.

A whole day is being devoted to family fun on Saturday, 20 May, with highlights including free sports activities, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Medicine show, hands-on science experiments and a Peter Rabbit Roadshow.

Pubs and bars across the city will also play host to informal talks by University researchers from 15-17 May as part of Liverpool’s very first Pint of Science festival.

Professor Janet Beer, Vice-Chancellor, said: “Open House is a series of public events with truly wide-ranging appeal and I would like to encourage people from the Liverpool City Region and beyond to come along and get involved.”

“The University and its students have a big presence in the city: the work we do changes lives in this country and around the world, but we’re well aware that we may be something of a mystery to many people in our local communities.”

“We are keen to make Open House your opportunity to learn about both the university and its impact on the world around us.”

Open House runs from Monday, 15 May to Thursday, 25 May. To find out more, and book your tickets, please visit www.liverpool.ac.uk/openhouse
