Dr McCarthy was presented with the Potts Medal by Benjamin Roberts, President of ChemSoc
This year’s Potts Medal has been awarded to University of Liverpool graduate and Executive Director of Pfizer, Dr Timothy McCarthy.
The Potts Medal, named in honour of distinguished chemist Harold Edwin Potts (BSc Chemistry 1906, MSc 1907), was established in 1933 to recognise outstanding contribution to Chemistry. The winner is chosen each year by members of the University’s student Chemistry society, ChemSoc.
Dr McCarthy is currently an Executive Director at Pfizer, leading the Clinical & Translational Imaging Group, which works across the enterprise to provide imaging expertise (such as MRI and Ultrasound) solutions to clinical teams.
Outside Pfizer, Tim has been active in the imaging community – he was President of the Academy of Molecular Imaging (AMI) from 2008 to 2011 and is a founding director and past-President of the Society of Non-Invasive Imaging in Drug Development (SNIDD). In addition to his University of Liverpool undergraduate degree and doctorate, he holds an MBA from Washington University in St Louis.
Dr McCarthy travelled from Cambridge, Massachusetts to accept the award and delivered a lecture as is tradition for Potts Medal winners. The lecture, entitled ‘From Chemistry to Biomarkers, via Positrons: my journey since leaving Liverpool.’ was delivered to students, alumni and staff at the Gossage Theatre, Chemistry Building.
Dr McCarthy was also treated to a tour of the Central Teaching Laboratories and Materials Innovation Factory (MIF) on campus and a celebratory dinner at the Victoria Gallery & Museum hosted by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer.
The Potts medal was reinstated in 2014 thanks to a generous, anonymous alumni donation.
