There are just three weeks to go until we open the doors for our very first Open House, and with some events already sold out, it’s proving a popular draw.
Running from 15-25 May and featuring a vibrant line up of topical talks, performances, exhibitions and interactive experiences, there is something on offer to engage and entertain people of all ages and interests.
Talks and debates
Join us for the Low Carbon Liverpool Debate on Monday, 15 May, where we’ll ask what more can be done to make life in Liverpool more environmentally sustainable. From harnessing the ‘Power of the Mersey’ to improving sustainable transport infrastructure, such as cycle lanes, and solar panels on public buildings, what can the new city region do to become a global climate leader?
A book written by former University of Liverpool warden Amy Buller in the 1940s is the focus of our Darkness over Germany: A Warning From History discussion event on Wednesday, 17 May. The book, Darkness over Germany, is based on Amy’s encounters with Nazi leaders and opponents and provides a fascinating insight into the radicalisation of young Germans in the late 1930s, with real resonance in current times.
Our Return of the European Refugee Camp event on Thursday, 18 May, will explore the migration emergency in Europe and consider its politics, the implications for health and wellbeing of refugees, and potential humanitarian and political solutions. First-hand experiences will be shared by a number of special guests, including Syrian refugee and filmmaker Ahmad Al Rashid.
Join physicist Professor Tara Shears on Thursday, 25 May for an insight into how particle physics is helping to discover some of the greatest mysteries of our universe at our special ‘supersized’ Science in the Snug evening.
Pubs and bars across the city will also play host to informal talks by University researchers from 15-17 May as part of Liverpool’s very first Pint of Science festival.
LightNight and families
As part of Liverpool’s LightNight Festival on Friday, 19 May, we’re hosting a special evening of activity at the Victoria Gallery & Museum, including a specially-commissioned outdoor light projection courtesy of Liverpool-born artist John Higgins, who found global success as a comic book artist and writer for 2000AD, DC, and Marvel.
Then we’re straight back on Saturday, 20 May, for a whole day of family fun, with highlights including free sports activities, hands-on science experiments, walks and tours and much more.
