The University’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facility will soon re-open following the installation of a £1.6m state-of-the-art scanner. To mark the occasion, and the facility’s new capabilities, it will be renamed the Liverpool Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre (LiMRIC).
LiMRIC is a shared research facility within the HLS Technology Directorate and supports a wide range of research using MR-based techniques. Scanning was suspended in February to allow the old instruments to be replaced with a new research grade Siemens Prisma 3T MR scanner. Staff training is now underway and it’s anticipated that scanning will recommence within the next few weeks.
Professor Graham Kemp, Academic Lead for the LiMRIC, said; “The Prisma is a superb instrument, the result of a substantial investment by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. It will enable the highest quality scanning and expand our range of MR techniques. It’s also a good moment to rename the facility and reflect our new focus.”
LiMRIC expects to be fully operational again by July. A formal relaunch event will be arranged in the coming months to publicise the developments.
