TV doctor and filmmaker to give public neuroscience lecture

Dr Saleyha Ahsan

Celebrity doctor Saleyha Ahsan will be visiting Liverpool later this month to present the annual Sutcliffe Kerr Lecture, which is held in conjunction with The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Ahsan co presents the hit BBC 2 television programme ‘Trust me, I’m a Doctor’ and has also worked as a humanitarian doctor in war zones including Bosnia, Afghanistan and Libya.

Professor Tom Solomon, Director of the University’s Institute of Infection and Global Health and a Consultant Neurologist at The Walton Centre, is hosting the free event. He said: “I am delighted we have Dr Ahsan giving the Sutcliffe Kerr lecture this year. She has a fascinating background, detailing casualty situations ranging from leafy Wales to war torn Syria.

“It’s going to be incredibly insightful to hear her account of being a doctor in these different situations. This is a real opportunity for people to meet a fantastic journalist and doctor and take part in a thought-provoking evening.”

When she’s not filming or reporting from war zones, Dr Ahsan works at Bangor Hospital as an A&E doctor. She said: “I am going to talk about a number of experiences which led me to write a play for BBC Radio 4 on brain injury. I’m looking forward to highlighting the network in the North West too, which allows me to refer my patients to excellent centres like The Walton Centre.”

The event commemorates Alan Sutcliffe Kerr, a leading neurosurgeon who played a major role in founding The Walton Centre as a separate, specialist NHS trust for neuroscience.

Past lectures have been given by ‘The Naked Scientist’ Dr Chris Smith, Neuroscientist Dame Nancy Rothwell and Philosopher Professor Raymond Tallis.

The Lecture takes place Wednesday, 21 June in the Sid Watkins Building at The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, Lower Lane, Fazakerley. Registration from 5.30pm, Lecture 6.00 – 7.00pm.
