Academic Ranking of World Universities published

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2017 has positioned the University of Liverpool 101-150 in the world and 10-17 in the UK.

At subject level, Veterinary Science at Liverpool was ranked 6th in the world; Aerospace Engineering was ranked 38th; and Public Health was ranked 41st.

Cambridge remains the top ranked UK institution (3rd overall), while Harvard University remains number one in the world for the 15th year. There are 50 UK institutions which make the top 800 list.

The ARWU is produced by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy and was first published in 2003. Institutions are measured across six indicators: number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Reuters; number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index; Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index and per capita performance of a university.

More than 1,400 universities are ranked every year and the best 800 are published. Institutions ranked outside the top 100 are ranked in groups because there are very small differences between scores. Liverpool is equally ranked 101-150 alongside Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Southampton and Warwick – the same ranking the University achieved last year.

Its 2017 UK ranking is 10-17, compared with 9-15 last year. The number in this UK grouping can vary year-on-year depending on the number of UK institutions included in top tiers of the rankings.

In addition to an overall table, institutions are ranked in 52 subjects across five broad faculty areas: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medicine and Social Sciences. Liverpool appears in 26 subject listings.
