Liverpool academics appointed REF 2021 sub-panel chairs

Professor Dinah Birch CBE

The sub-panel chairs for Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 have been announced with two representatives appointed from the University of Liverpool.

REF is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK universities and higher education colleges. The results of the REF drive the allocation of public funding for research.

Professor Charles Forsdick from the University’s Department of Modern Languages and Cultures will chair the REF Modern Languages and Linguistics sub-panel. Professor Peter Clegg from the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease will chair the Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Science sub-panel.

The sub-panels will review submissions to the REF according to a set of assessment criteria and level definitions. A full list of sub-panel chairs for REF 2021 are now available here.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Cultural Impact, Professor Dinah Birch CBE, has already been announced as Chair for one of the four main REF panels – Arts and Humanities.

Professor Birch said: “Having been appointed Chair of Main Panel D in REF2021, I will have responsibility for overseeing the work of the 10 sub-panels that will judge the research and impact produced across the arts and humanities in the UK.

“The national research base in these disciplines is strong and very diverse, and it will be part of my role to ensure a consistent and equitable approach to its assessment. I’m greatly looking forward to the challenge.”
