Campus Football: Title race hots up as teams prepare for Campus Cup semi-finals

University of Liverpool Football Coordinator and undergraduate student, Matt Addison, provides an update on campus league and cup positions as we approach the closing stages:

“Campus Football is entering the closing stages as we head into the Easter break. Most teams are at least two thirds of the way through their league campaign, and the Campus Cup is edging closer to the showpiece final, which is provisionally set for Wednesday, 9 May.

In Wednesday’s Division One, Mathletico Madrid are currently at the top of the league, ahead of Law FC, who are just a point behind, but who have played two games more.

Engineering Wednesday and ULMS are in hot pursuit, having played eight games, one more than Mathletico Madrid, and are just two points behind the leaders, separated themselves only by goal difference.

In Division Two, Politics B remain unbeaten this season, having won eight times and drawn twice. They are the current leaders, sitting a point ahead of Morton House FC.

Athletico International are just a little way off the top two: they sit third with ten points fewer than the side above them, but do have two games in hand. Red City currently occupy fourth spot, but they have only played seven times at the time of writing, three fewer than the top two.

In Sunday’s Division One, Mathletico Madrid and Engineering Sunday are separated only by goal difference at the top of the table. Both are tied on 18 points after seven games, and with two more games to play each, the title race could not be closer.

Just behind the runaway top two sit Politics Sunday and DEF Squad Sunday (pictured left). They are both on 12 points, although the latter have played one game fewer than the former.

The title race in Division Two for Sunday is even closer, with three teams all on 12 points. Convocation have played five times, 50 Shades of Yellow have played six, and Politics B Sunday have played seven. Viva Ken Barlow are just two points behind the leading pack having played six matches.

As for the Campus Cup, on the Wednesday side of the draw, Mathletico Madrid are through to the semi-final stage after they demolished Life Sciences by 13 goals to two in the previous round.

Athletico International are also through after they edged out Engineering Wednesday (pictured left) in their quarter-final, a team who are a division above them in the league rankings.

Athletico International’s captain, Edson Paredes, said: “After a pretty poor start to the season, with 12 new faces in our 18-man squad, within three weeks we managed to get a solid squad with really good chemistry in midfield and great form from our strikers.

“The team feels more confident game by game with the results we’ve been getting putting us in the top three.”

Athletico International will find out their semi-final opponents shortly after the Easter break.

On the cup, Paredes added: “We’ve reached the semi-finals after beating a hard Morton House team and an always strong Engineers team from Division One.

“The quarter-final was our toughest game this season and with a last minute header taking us to penalties (it finished 1-1 in 90 minutes), the winning spirit of the team has got stronger.

“I think the greatest achievement within the team so far has been to create a solid group of people that understand when it’s not possible to give minutes on the pitch to everyone and still support the team.

“With 14 nationalities within the group and different football styles. The chemistry in every line on the pitch has come together.”

Each of the two Wednesday teams will face a team from the Sunday side of the draw in the semi-finals, with the Sunday teams who are through still to be confirmed. The semi-finals will take place on two consecutive Fridays on the 3G at Wyncote Sports Grounds, on April 20 and 27.
