This year’s Potts Medal has been awarded to University of Liverpool graduate and Chief Scientific Officer at Oxford Nanopore, Dr John Milton.
The Potts Medal, named in honour of distinguished chemist Harold Edwin Potts (BSc Chemistry 1906, MSc 1907), was established in 1933 to recognise outstanding contribution to Chemistry. The winner is chosen each year by members of the University’s student Chemistry society, ChemSoc.
As Chief Scientific Officer at Oxford Nanopore, Dr John Milton (BSc Hons Chemistry 1988, PhD 1991) has responsibility for all chemical and biological R&D activity within the company and particularly the design and delivery of the company’s nanopore-based sequencing technology. John drives the primary architectural designs of the chemical systems, building a disruptive system ready for launch into the marketplace.
John will deliver a lecture entitled ‘DNA sequencing. Past, present and future’, which will compare and contrast the progress made over the last 20 years for both DNA sequencing and synthesis based on John’s experiences. The lecture will also provide a glimpse into the next scientific challenges in this area.
The event will be held at 3pm in the Gossage Lecture Theatre, Department of Chemistry. The event is free to attend, but please book your tickets.
The Potts medal was reinstated in 2014 thanks to a generous, anonymous alumni donation.
