The diet product is part of the lucrative weight loss market, with an estimated worth of 66 billion dollars in the US, and 44 billion Europe. While the market’s expansion has kept pace with our growing waistlines, its origins can be traced back to a time when food was scarce. This is a rebroadcast of our interview with Dr Myriam Wilks-Heeg, Lecturer in Twentieth Century History, on the history of slimming in the UK and how it became an obsession for women.
