Fancy taking part in the Giants Spectacular?
After years of speculation, it has been confirmed that the Giants are returning to Liverpool and Wirral this October (4 – 7 October 2018) for the final part of the Giants Spectacular trilogy.
Royal de Luxe, the world’s leading street theatre company, is returning to Liverpool for the third time since its debut in the city in 2008 to put on a free show called Liverpool’s Dream.
With partners Culture Liverpool, we are able to offer our students an additional chance to get involved with the show by volunteering as stewards, events ambassadors and physio masseurs.
The general application process for volunteering at the event is now closed; but we are able to offer our students a limited number of spaces exclusive to the University which will give those involved the chance to be at the heart of the action throughout the three-day event.
The third Giant Spectacular is expected to bring visitors to the city from across the world and bring millions of pounds into the local economy.
Royal de Luxe first came to the city in 2012 with Sea Odyssey – a story inspired by the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic. The adventures of the Little Girl Giant, her playful canine companion Xolo and the Diver attracted crowds of around 800,000 and brought in £32million to the local economy.
The Little Girl and Xolo returned in July 2014 for Memories of August 1914. This time they were joined by a Grandmother whose stories brought to life the impact of preparations of the First World War had on the city. It is widely regarded as the city’s biggest ever event, attracting one million people and bringing a £46m boost to the local economy.
The volunteering positions which are available to students are:
Benevole stewards – to form the safety cordon around the Giant
- Must be available all parade days (5, 6, 7 October)
- Must be able to walk up to 7km per day
- Must be able to crouch down during the parade
- Good communication skills
- Must be comfortable in large crowds
Event Ambassadors – to provide information to the public regarding the event, local facilities and general city information
- Must have good communication skills
- Experience of customer service would be an advantage
- Good knowledge of Liverpool and/or Wirral
- Will involve a shift system so you can volunteer for half a day on any of the parade days, a full day, two days or all three days
Physios/Masseurs – to provide massage/physio to the Lilliputians on parade days (5, 6, 7 October) during the siesta times (around lunch time) and at the end of the day
- Required on the parade days
- Must be either a student physio or masseur, or fully qualified
More details, including the route for the event, will be revealed in September.

The event is one of the major highlights of the Liverpool 2018 programme – a year-long celebration which marks a decade since the city held the game-changing title of European Capital of Culture. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is supporting several highlight Liverpool 2018 events with £5 million from the Single Investment Fund (SIF).

You will need to include:
- Your full name and student ID
- The volunteering position you are interested in
- The days you are available to volunteer
- Information about any relevant experience
- A paragraph explaining why you would like to be involved
The deadline for all student applications is midnight on Sunday, 9 September 2018. The successful applicants will be contacted by Culture Liverpool with further information and assigned volunteering roles in the week beginning 10 September 2018.
