Professor elected as Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Professor of Ophthalmic Bioengineering Rachel Williams has been elected to the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Professor Williams is one of 50 leading engineers from the UK and around the world who have been elected to join the Fellowship in 2018 in recognition of their outstanding and continuing contributions to the profession.

As the UK’s national academy for engineering and technology, the Royal Academy of Engineering brings together the most talented and successful engineers – our Fellows – to advance and promote excellence in engineering for the benefit of society. The Academy’s Fellowship represents the nation’s best engineering researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, business and industry leaders. Election to the Academy is by invitation only.

Professor Williams is a Professor of Ophthalmic Bioengineering in the Department of Eye and Vision Science, Institute Research Lead and Deputy Head of the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease. She works closely with clinical ophthalmology colleagues on several cross-disciplinary projects. Currently an EPSRC Engineering for Growth fellow working on ‘Building advanced materials to treat vision loss.

Of the Fellowship Professor Williams, said: “I was honoured and delighted to accept the Fellowship. I look forward to playing a more active part in the affairs of the Royal Academy.”
