Liverpool has so much to offer – from world-class sport through to an incredible music scene. In this article, we’ve rounded up five experiences that are completely unique to the city. If you think we’ve missed an activity that should be on the list, let us know via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (@LivUni).
1. Poetry in the Bombed Out Church, £1
By now, even first years will know about the iconic Bombed Out Church (AKA St Luke’s). Located at the intersection of Berry Street and Hardman Street, the church is famous for it’s hollowed out interior. As the name suggests, the church was bombed in the spring of 1941.
The building ended up burning for three days, but the venue is now used to host lots of (roofless) events, from film screenings and market days through to Tai Chi sessions and exhibitions. The church also runs regular poetry open mic nights. The next open mic session takes place on Friday, 21 October from 4pm-6pm and costs £1. You can find out more about the Bombed Out Church’s upcoming events here.
2. Yoga in the Palm House, £8
The Palm House is located within Sefton Park and is a three-tier dome conservatory full of incredible plants, sculptures and 20 different types of palms. It is also a fantastic venue and about once month the Palm House runs a yoga class. The next class is on Wednesday, 7 November at 9:30-10:30am and is a relaxing flow class open to all abilities.
3.Gig at the Liverpool Cathedral
These days you can go to some gigs in some pretty unusual locations – from Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms (Kasabian) to Brighton Pier’s sewer system (The King Blues). But have you ever been to a gig in a cathedral? If you have, we’re pretty sure it wasn’t as incredible as the interior of Liverpool Cathedral.
The Cathedral hosts gigs throughout the year and the next date in the calendar is Friday, 26th October for Cream Classical, a 50 piece orchestra performing seminal records from the house and trance dance scene.
4. Daffodils in Sefton Park, Free
During the spring, Sefton Park’s incredible daffodils bloom and turn the park from green to yellow. You can normally see the flowers from around March onwards and it’s well worth a trip.
5. Have a drink at the Philhramonic
The Philharmonic pub is a fantastic venue in its own right, but it also boasts the only grade II-listed men’s toilets in the country. If you’ve got visitors staying with you, it might make a unique addition to your Liverpool tour.
