A scholarship worth $15,000 which includes the chance to spend eight weeks in Washington DC and New York City is on offer to students as part of the Washington Ireland Program (WIP).
The opportunity is available to students from any discipline who consider Ireland or Northern Ireland to be their home, are aged 18 or over, and are studying full-time. The aim of the program is to develop the skills and networks of future leaders and the University of Liverpool is the only non-Irish University partner in the scheme.
WIP is a twelve month program of personal and professional development, which includes eight weeks in the United States. Successful applicants will have a one week orientation in Washington, a one week summit in New York City, followed by six weeks in either Washington or New York. During this time students gain invaluable practical experience by completing internships in either US government, media, business or non-profit organisations.
Last year two University of Liverpool Students took up the highly sought-after internships after being selected ahead of more than 500 applicants from across Ireland and the UK. Politics with Law student Asa Mallon worked in the Capitol Hill office of former Republican Presidential candidate, Senator John McCain, while Forensic and Investigative Psychology student Róisín Carroll was based at the National Juvenile Defender Center in Washington DC.
On completion of the program students join an active alumni community who are involved in academia, business, media and politics, which includes figures such as Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar, who took part in WIP in 2000.
