Staff and students from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences dressed up as superheroes for the day to host a public engagaement event at the Manchester Science Festival.
More than 900 people attended the University’s ‘Superhuman Body’ family-friendly event at the Science and Industry Museum, which focused on the body’s immune system and the bugs it encounters.
A team of 24 ran seven different hands-on activities that were all designed by Faculty researchers. Examples included making DNA keyrings, learning about the bacteria found on everyday objects such as toothbrushes and beards, and a special game of immune cell ‘top trumps’.
Laura Winters, Public Engagement Manager for the Faculty, said: “This was the first time as a Faculty that we’ve taken part in Manchester Science Festival, so it was a brilliant opportunity for us to be part of one of the country’s biggest science festivals and share our research with a wide audience. The families who attended the event seemed to really enjoy finding out all about the amazing human body, and our researchers enjoyed getting to dress up as superheroes for the day!”
