A PhD student in the School of Engineering has won this year’s University Christmas card design contest.
Maleki Hesam has scooped the top prize of £120 in book tokens after his digital design of the University’s Victoria Building was chosen as the winning entry by the judging panel (image below).
Second place went to Head Gardener at Ness Gardens, Phil Kay, with a beautiful photograph of the monkey puzzle tree and herbaceous border in the snow at the University’s Ness Botanic Gardens in Wirral (image below). He has won £60 in book tokens.
A keen photographer, his success follows a third place win in the 2016 competition where he submitted a photograph of a robin at the 64-acre garden owned and managed by the University.
Third place this year has been awarded to Sijia Chen, a second year Architecture student, with a digital design of Father Christmas on his sleigh flying over the Victoria Building. The design also cleverly incorporates the famous Liverpool icon, the Superlambanana, flying alongside the traditional Christmas reindeer (image below). She has won £30 in book tokens.
The competition was launched by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Janet Beer last month and received many entries including photographs, paintings, drawings and digital designs. Students and staff were encouraged to submit designs that offer perspectives on what makes Liverpool a unique place to live, study or work.
Commenting on the competition, Professor Beer said: “This year’s competition was very close. We received lots of entries and it was a privilege to be able to see the creative talent which exists within our University community.
“Thank you to everyone who submitted a design, and especially to our winners. We are very much looking forward to sharing the designs with our stakeholders this Christmas.”
