New Liverpool International College development ‘tops out’

A £35M ‘live-learn’ facility for international students being developed by the University of Liverpool and Kaplan is well underway with Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Janet Beer; Mayor Joe Anderson; Linda Cowan, Managing Director of Kaplan International Pathways; and Leelee Yates, Director of Liverpool International College performing a traditional ‘topping-out’ ceremony.

The new home for Liverpool International College, in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, will accommodate students from all over the world who study with Kaplan for entry into the University’s degree programmes. The facility will accommodate more than 900 students, providing state-of-the-art teaching and residential accommodation, and is due to open in September 2019.

Kaplan

Liverpool International College was established more than 10 years ago as a result of the University’s partnership with Kaplan. The college delivers a range of courses to prepare international students for entry into university programmes, providing a bridge for students from education systems which do not directly map into UK higher education and the development of skills necessary for successful undergraduate or postgraduate study.

Since opening in 2007 with an initial cohort of 146 students, Liverpool International College has grown to become one of the largest embedded colleges in the UK. Over the decade, more than 6,500 students from almost 100 nationalities have studied at the college and 20% of the University of Liverpool’s international recruitment is achieved via pathways at the college.

Diversity

University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Janet Beer, said: “Our partnership with Kaplan enables us to provide opportunities for a great many international students to study and succeed with us.

“International students bring a huge amount to the city – not just in terms of their economic contribution but in the way they enrich the city and add to its wonderful diversity.

“The fabulous new Liverpool International College facility will provide an outstanding student experience for international students as well as a quality environment they will enjoy living and studying in.”

Outstanding opportunities

Liverpool International College Director, Leelee Yates, said: “The partnership between Kaplan and the University of Liverpool is a fantastic example of how two organisations can come together and create outstanding opportunities for students, staff and the wider community.

“The new building is designed to help students succeed in their learning journey. Our new college spaces build on our successful, tried-and-tested approaches to learning and teaching, and encourage flexible, student-centred pedagogies.”
