The University of Liverpool is taking forward its plans to establish a specialist Maths School that will offer a world-leading maths education for young people who wish to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computer Science A Levels.
The University of Liverpool Maths School will be the only such specialist maths school in the North of England, and one of only three in the UK.
As well as offering a challenging and innovative A Level curriculum for the most able young mathematicians, the School will work with partners to raise attainment and interest in mathematics for pupils of all ages and abilities across the whole Liverpool City Region.
It also seeks to address the gender imbalance that currently exists in the study of Further Maths.
The University is in the process of recruiting a Headteacher who will play a pivotal role in establishing the new School from the pre-opening phase.
Professor Gavin Brown, Chair of the University of Liverpool Mathematics School Board of Trustees, said: “The University of Liverpool Maths School is a really exciting new development that will create a centre of excellence for maths education in addition to benefiting all schools, colleges and pupils in the region.
“The role of the Headteacher is fundamental to the success of the School and we are looking for an inspirational and motivational leader with credibility in the field of mathematics to ensure that the School makes a substantial impact on mathematical education in the Liverpool City Region.”

Due to open in September 2020, the new School will initially be located in the Alistair Pilkington Building on the University campus, where it will benefit from the close proximity and association with the University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, before moving to a permanent home close to campus.
Ahead of its official opening next year, the University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences will be hosting outreach activities during the Easter holidays to support Year 11 pupils ahead of their GCSE exams.
Six schools, one from each borough of Liverpool, will be hosting the Math’s school outreach events throughout April with over 300 GCSE Maths students planning to attend. On these days students will undertake activities including revision sessions, problem solving and confidence building aimed at supporting students attain the highest grades in their mathematics GCSE.
