Milestone for University led Personalised Medicine network

Personalised Medicine

A University of Liverpool led network dedicated to developing collaborative partnerships for the further development of research into personalised medicine, now has more than 1,000 members.

The Pharmacogenetics and Stratified Medicine Network is a UK based network dedicated to developing collaborative partnerships between academic researchers, healthcare professionals, industry partners, regulatory bodies and patients to synergize research into personalised/precision medicine across the UK, and internationally, to support its adoption into the clinic.

The Network was founded in 2010 by Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, the David Weatherall Chair of Medicine and NHS Chair of Pharmacogenetics at the University, following a Department of Health Genetics White Paper.

Excellent reputation

As of March 2019 the Network has more than 1,000 individual members drawn from academia, medicine, industry, regulatory authorities and patient groups across the UK and elsewhere, the majority of whom are engaged in research into patient and/or disease stratification.

This month the Network hosted its 6th annual Open Meeting which attracted more than 250 delegates from across academia, healthcare sector, industry, regulators patients and others. Feedback after the meeting was hugely positive with many commenting that this was now the go-to meeting for personalised medicine. Over the last five years, the event has developed an excellent reputation for the quality of speakers and diversity of attendees. In particular, the meeting is attracting more clinical representation, which will helping in supporting the NHS Long Term Plan.

The Network also holds workshops, usually at the Liverpool in London campus, in collaboration with key organisations such as NHS England and MHRA which is influencing policy and driving the personalised medicine agenda nationally and internationally.

Milestone

Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, said: “I am pleased that the value of the Network in helping the implementation of personalised medicine has been recognised by way of increased global membership year-on-year. This increase has culminated in this milestone being achieved and makes the Network one of the largest of its kind in the world.”

Professor Sir Pirmohamed is also a non-executive director of NHS England and Director of the MRC Centre for Drug Safety Science and Wolfson Centre for Personalised Medicine.
