For the second year running the University is taking part in the ADHD Foundation’s Umbrella Project which celebrates the gifts, talents and employability of those with ADHD and Autism, as well as raising awareness of what it means to be ‘neuro-diverse’.
Over 300 school children in Liverpool and Greater Manchester have taken part in the project since 2017 and this year the University will again be displaying umbrellas in the Victoria Gallery and Museum. This year the umbrellas will also appear in four new locations – the Guild, Student Services in the Alsop Building, Sport Liverpool and Ness Gardens.
The umbrellas have been brightly decorated by children from Rowan Park School in Litherland, which meets the needs of pupils with severe, complex, profound and multiple learning difficulties, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and sensory impairments. In celebration of the children’s creativity and all that makes them unique, each umbrella is signed by a child from the school and each umbrella states their superpower.
The installations have been organised by Head of Campus Support Services, Andrew Molloy. Andrew said: “I’m delighted and overjoyed that we are displaying the colourful umbrellas again this year. This time around, they will be on display in additional locations compared to last year to help celebrate the super powers of people who live with ADHD and Autism.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the children of Rowan Park School who decorated the umbrellas and the ADHD Foundation for leading the positive promotion in the city of Liverpool.”
The umbrella art-installations will also be displayed in the city centre in Church Alley on Wednesday, 12 June with an accompanying flash mob. There are additional displays in Media City in Manchester on Tuesday, 25 June and Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday, 11 June.
