After signing up to take on The Coniston Challenge to raise vital funds for Alder Hey Children’s Charity, Members of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences smashed their £4,500 target, raising almost £7,000 in total.
14 members of staff and two family members competed in the Lake District triathlon (with a twist) on the 6 July – a gruelling physical challenge consisting of a 10km trek up and down the “Old Man of Coniston” (2634ft) a 17km bike race and a 3km kayak across Coniston Water.
Executive Pro-Vice Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Professor Louise Kenny and members of the FHLS Coniston Challenge team handed over the cheque to Alder Hey this month. Alder Hey Children’s Charity Fundraising Manager, Helen Hughes, was there to receive the cheque. The total raised by Team FHLS was £6,968.50. Overall the Coniston event itself raised over £100k for Alder Hey. Team FHLS would like to thank all members of staff who supported the fundraising for the event.
All proceeds will go to Alder Hey Children’s Charity, a charity that raises funds for projects which will enhance and improve the lives of its patients and families. Funds are used to invest for example in specialist medical equipment and hi-tech distraction equipment designed and proven to reduce pain and anxiety.
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences maintains its strong links with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in various areas of vital research from identifying alternative treatments for children with epilepsy and collaborating on the Children’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy.
The University’s partnership with the charity has helped to make an impact on the lives of children and young people in the local area and across the world.
