The Royal Institution’s Christmas Lectures will be screened live in Liverpool next month at a special event hosted by the University of Liverpool.
On the theme of ‘Secret and lies’, mathematician and TV presenter Dr Hannah Fry will unmask the hidden numbers, rules and patterns that secretly influence our daily lives in ways we could never imagine.
On Thursday 12 December, a lucky audience in Liverpool will have the exciting opportunity to preview the first lecture of the three-part series. The University is one of 18 venues around the UK to be streaming the lectures live from the Ri in London while they are being recorded for broadcast on BBC Four.
In addition to the lecture, which is predominantly aimed at young people aged 11-17 years, university scientists will be hosting a family-friendly interactive Science Fair showcasing some of Liverpool’s world-leading research.
Event organiser Dr Jenna Kenyani, a public engagement officer in the University’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, said: “The Ri Christmas lectures had a huge impact on me as a child helping to excite and inspire me about science and to encourage me to become a scientist. It gives me great pleasure knowing that local young people will have an opportunity to be able to engage in a new way with these lectures.
“Public Engagement is particularly important in today’s world to promote a two-way conversation around research and improve people’s understanding of the fantastic work we do at the University.”
The Christmas Lectures are the Royal Institution’s biggest and most famous, demonstration-based science events for young people. They are broadcast on UK television every Christmas and have formed part of the festive tradition for generations.
The Ri has been supported in sharing the Lectures nationally by The UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) which brings together all the major public science centres and museums across the UK.
