University renews Cyber Essentials accreditation

The Computing Services Department has once again received Cyber Essentials accreditation for the University’s Managed Windows Service.

Securing Cyber Essentials certification demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the University’s information security protocols meet industry standards.

Cyber Essentials is a Government-backed scheme that helps an organisation to protect itself against a range of common cyber attacks. This accreditation allows the University to continue to work and secure research opportunities with various institutions and establishments, which is imperative for us as a research driven Russell Group University.

Mike Parkins, CSD’s Security Team Leader, said: “Our team works tirelessly to stop any attacks on our digital environment, and Cyber Essentials accreditation just confirms that our Managed Windows Service (MWS) is effective, robust and fit-for-purpose in a research environment.”

This is the second year the MWS has received this accreditation, after the introduction of the Admin Rights Manager, a programme that automatically creates an environment where administrator Rights are something you access temporarily rather than permanently on your device.

The MWS is the University’s standard Windows-based IT system used on all PCs in Teaching Centres as well as all new staff PCs.
